ASSESSMENTS

Shine utilizes a variety of developmental, academic, and social/emotional assessments to gain a better understanding of your child’s strengths, skills, and areas that may be behind his/her peers. Assessment results help gauge specific areas that need attention and Shine staff will assist in the creation of activities that are able be implemented at home, school, or other social situations.

Shine is pleased to offer developmental screenings to local preschools and child care centers - similar to school-wide vision and hearing screenings. The comprehensive assessment provides parents with a graphical representation of five key areas; including social-emotional, cognitive, communication, adaptive behavior, and physical development. Contact us for more information about how we can come to your preschool to offer this unique and valuable service!

ABA 1:1

Shine’s team of highly-trained and experienced practitioners of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), are well versed in helping your child learn complex skills, functional communication (helping your child effectively communicate what he or she wants), academic and learning readiness, self-help, and socialization. ABA uses positive reinforcement, behavior shaping, motivation, along with visual and verbal cues to help your child learn and adapt to his environment. Due to extreme variance in the presentation of ASD, each program is uniquely tailored to every child and is supervised by a Shine Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Some of the more common treatment modalities within ABA and used by Shine are:

  • Incidental Teaching

  • Natural Environment Teaching

  • Pivotal Response Teaching

  • Discrete Trial Teaching

  • Verbal Behavior Teaching

  • Social and Play Skills

By using a variety of techniques, learning complex skills is broken down in smaller, individual steps that are guided by Shine staff; including the Behavior Technician (BT) and BCBA. Through 1:1 ABA, your child will have many opportunities to practice and generalize new skills while simultaneously being reinforced and supported by his BT. New skills are added, when appropriate, and guidance is gradually faded back so your child will gain positive social reinforcement naturally from his environment.

SCHOOL SHADOW

Children with ASD, or other learning impairments, often fail to learn through typical learning methods and the Behavior Technician or “Shadow” provides consistency to the child in a setting which can otherwise be overwhelming.

Shine’s role in the classroom is to teach the child to successfully learn within the school environment, and we promote independent functioning by facilitating independent participation in the classroom. We teach skills such as: initiating and responding in the classroom, independent self-care, as well as encouraging appropriate social interaction with peers.

PEERS®

The Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®) is world-renowned for providing evidence-based social skills treatment to preschoolers, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and other socio-emotional problems.

First developed at UCLA by PEERS® Clinic director, Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson, the program has expanded to locations across the United States, has been translated into over a dozen languages, and is used in over 80 countries across the globe.

-Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior

PEERS is an evidenced-based social skills group for individuals with ASD, as well as those which have social/emotional challenges associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and depression. The Program’s focus is on making and keeping friends and teaches skills on handling conflict, rejection, and bullying

PEERS is run continuously as 16-week sessions which meet weekly for 90 minutes. Parent(s)/ caregiver meetings are held concurrently to help generalize new skills within the home and community.

We are in network with Aetna, Anthem and Cigna.

For out-of-network insurance providers;  some clients are able to get reimbursed through their insurance so we urge you to get pre-authorization as we do not bill insurance. We will, however, provide an invoice that you can submit to your insurance company.

Age: PEERS Training is appropriate for adolescents aged 11-19. Students will be placed in social groups relevant to their age and skill level.

When: Wednesday evenings. Contact us to join the next session.

Social Skills Classes (Individual Sessions Available)

We are pleased to announce our Social Skills group for Preschool and Elementary School Children. Our program utilizes evidence-based strategies that involve systematically teaching social skills to address the individual needs of each student. In addition to instruction taught in the Social Skills Group, children will be given “homework” to complete within the home and community to help generalize their social skills. We believe in reinforcing children in the group and at home so the experience becomes highly reinforcing for them.

FBA

After Shine has met with you regarding concerns you have for your child, we will assess and create the Functional Behavior Assessment or FBA. The FBA is a detailed and descriptive document, listing all observed and reported skills, behaviors, and developmental milestones met or yet unmet; as well as the creation of behavioral, social, and self-care goals. Furthermore, the FBA documents the initial plan of implementation and a “road map” of the next 6 months to 1 year in regards to behavioral acquisition, the reduction of maladaptive or undesired behaviors, and skill development. Parent input is key to the creation of the FBA and we do our best to implement strategies to create harmony within your home.
